Fitted tuxedos; the new normal in tuxedo coats!

Fitted Tuxedos

I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures of some of the more old fashioned tuxedos. And to be perfectly honest, many people these days no longer find them very desirable. As such, more and more wearers prefer the cleaner-cut fitted tuxedos.

This is mostly due to the small, minor features that tuxedos popular in earlier eras have. Now, I say tuxedos, but every single one of these thing applies to suits as well. These include:

  • Shoulder pads
  • Relaxed fit in the coat
  • Pleated tuxedo pants

Shoulder pads; not so desirable in fitted tuxedos

Once such feature is the so-called ‘shoulder pads.’ These subtle inserts are designed to artificially broaden the wearer’s shoulders, and make them look more masculine. However, in lower quality tuxedo coats, the shoulder pads are more obvious than in higher quality outfits.

Crisp, non-frumpy shoulders; a feature of a fitted tux

Fitted tuxedos eliminates this undesirable feature by either including much smaller shoulder pads, or eliminating them entirely.

Relaxed fit coat; also referred to sometimes as baggy.

This is another one of those coat features that people don’t really find desirable anymore. Many older coats have more of a straight-down cut. This gives them more of a, for lack of a better word, ‘boxy’ sort of look. This type of appearance doesn’t really mesh too well with the typical body type nowadays.

tux_ball
This fit actually isn’t optimal; there should be no ‘pull’ on the coat from the button. This gentleman needs a size bigger.

Lots of people prefer the fitted tuxedos also because it eliminates this feature. A fitted tuxedo sports more of a ‘tapered middle,’ which accentuated the build of the majority of people’s body build.

Look over there; is it Shakespeare? No, it’s just a guy in pleated pants.

Pleats are small folds in the thigh area of pants. These allow for more mobility and greater comfort when doing things like sitting, squatting, or even dancing.

fitted tuxedos
A pair of double-pleated tuxedo pants.

And while this is great, is had the side effect of simply making a person’s thighs look wider than they are. It also adds more loose fabric to hang free; not a good thing.

Pants that come with fitted tuxedos not only eliminate the pleats. They also go one step further, and provide a tighter fit. This is also known as ‘skinny fit pants, and they do give the wearer’s legs a more slender appearance.

However, if you have bigger legs, consider getting pleated pants, or go halfway; look for non-pleated, non-skinny fit pants. Skinny pants and large thighs or posterior are a volatile combination; ripped pants can mean a big rental replacement bill.

So these are just a few of the features that fitted tuxedos don’t include. However, there are some cases where these features can be more helpful than out-of-date. Be honest with your tuxedo expert.

Wedding Suits; the hottest ones this year!

Wedding Suits; the Hottest Ones this Year!

Weddings. Everyone had their ideal wedding, but some things pop up more than others. A big cake, a white dress (more on this later,) hand-written invitations, and pretty flowers are just a few.

Another thing that comes up often (not as often as dresses though,) is tuxedos. But seeing increasing surges of popularity every year lately, is wedding suits.

No, you didn’t read that wrong; wedding suits.

Wedding suits are exactly what they sound like: suits that someone wears to a wedding. And no, I’m not talking about the clothes the guests wear. I’m talking about the actual groom’s wedding duds.

No one knows exactly why, but more and more brides are seeing fit to put their grooms in suits for their wedding. Designers and manufacturers are quickly taking notice. And so as a result, there are more options than ever for good wedding suits nowadays.

Looking for the most popular wedding suits? Look no further.

But as you flick through Pinterest for ideas for your own wedding, you’ll surely come across some suits quite often. These are the champions that stand out among the others as the most popular wedding suits. I’ll be going over them generally, by color and by fit. More descriptive lists can be found in future articles.

The fit

wedding suits
Notice the narrowed shoulders, fitted pants and slight taper in the waist area; all qualities of a fitted wedding suit.

Generally, the most popular wedding suits all seem to follow one trend in particular: they’re all fitted suits. Fitted suits have swept the world and replaced standard cut outfits as the go-to for that modern look.

And for good reason: a fitted outfit is a great way to really bring out the good qualities in a person’s physique.

The colors

Now here, I’m not talking about vest, tie or shirt colors. I’m talking about the actual colors of the wedding suits themselves.

new-arrival-formal-font-b-blue-b-font-wedding-suits-for-men-notched-lapel-back-vent
A typical blue wedding suit; somewhere between navy and cobalt blue.

Suits can be seen in just about any color you can imagine. This is especially true since people sometimes use suit colors to stand out. These people will go for something that jumps, even if it doesn’t necessarily look good, like bright orange (Kraft Punk, anyone?) or also pink.

But by and large, for people serious about their wedding the most popular colors remain the same. Tones like dark grey, light grey, navy blue, cobalt, and even tan are quite common. Black suits aren’t as desirable as they used to be; these are more favorable for funerals or business meetings.

But as the Canadians say: ‘Fill your boots!’

These are some of the more popular wedding suits. But it’s your wedding; go with whatever feels best!

What kind of suits would you like to see at your own wedding? Let us know in the comments below!

Novelty Wedding Themes

Fun novelty wedding themes

So, a certain trend I’ve been seeing lately is novelty wedding themes. Now, I understand that there may be plenty of people out there whose life dream is to be married with the ‘Naruto’ theme song playing as the bride walks down the aisle. I want you all to know, that I’m not here to knock down your dreams. Please read with open minds, and if you disagree at the end, that’s fine. But there’s a good case against using novelty wedding themes for your wedding.

Novelty themes are great…I’ve been to some really fun parties that had themes like Ghostbusters, Pokemon, Star Wars, and even comic book characters. And therein, lies one of the problems with novelty wedding themes. You can have as many themed parties as you want throughout your lifetime. Hopefully, you’ll only have one wedding. Now, would you really want your wedding…the most important day in your life…to be indistinguishable from a themed house party you would throw?

darthc

It’s all in fun

I know what you are probably thinking: “But as long as people have fun, that’s all that matters, right? Why shouldn’t I be able to dress up like Link or Yu-Gi-Oh at my wedding? It’s MY wedding!” That’s true: it IS your wedding. It’s one of the biggest opportunities in your life to say something about who you are not just to your friends, but to your spouse-to-be’s family, your own family who you may not know very well, and whomever else. And with a themed wedding, your really only saying one thing: “I really really really like (insert name of band, tv show, sports team, super hero or movie here.)

A wedding is a celebration of your marriage to another person, not a celebration of your love for a particular TV show. The thought that you put into making your wedding not just like-able and memorable to you, but to everyone attending, says a lot about you as a person.

two wedding themes; an opinion piece

A couple of wedding themes

Another thing most people think about when planning their wedding is what the most popular wedding themes are. There are many many wedding themes out there, and what one bride and groom may love, another couple may be repulsed by. Choosing the right theme for your wedding can be intimidating, given all the choices that are out there, so here are two of the most popular wedding themes out there.

Classical

The first one is personally my favorite of the most popular wedding themes: Classical. Sometimes also referred to as vintage, this popular wedding theme usually involves lots of the colors black and white, and the wedding itself usually exudes an air of sophistication (just look at these  elegant wedding pictures!) The best thing about classical-themed weddings is they tend to have everyone looking their absolute best…and why would you want to look any less on the biggest day of your life?

Shabby Chic

Now we’ll go from one of my favorite popular wedding themes, to one of my least favorite popular wedding themes: shabby chic. Skipping past the fact that I detest the word ‘chic,’ let me first say this: done right, a shabby chic wedding theme could look okay. However, what makes it so bad is the sheer difficulty of executing it. You’ll spend days on the internet and running all over town. Looking for things that are in poor condition for your wedding.

Lace is nice, but too much lace can turn your wedding into a tacky affair. And when it’s done, unless it’s executed perfectly, the wedding will look like a collective neighborhood yard sale. According to http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shabby Meriam-Webster’s dictionary,) The word ‘shabby’ itself does not have a single good meaning; in poor condition, not fair, ill-kept…not things I would want to portray to my guests. There’s just something so cringingly hipster about making my big day look bad ironically.

Novelty tuxedo vests, yes or no?

Novelty Tux

Novelty tuxedo vests are a trend that only seems to be growing, and not slowing down at all. The novelty tuxedo vests can be a fun way to express your individuality, show your pride for your favorite sports team, or happily declare your allegiance to your favorite TV show or comic! We’ll be taking a closer look at novelty tuxedo vests, how they’re likely to be perceived, and whether they’re a good idea or not for your future event!

Novelty tuxedo vests, or any sort of novelty tuxedo accessories, can be quite fun to wear, and fetching to the right eyes. They can be instant conversation pieces (expect Duck Dynasty fans to stop and talk to you if you wear a camouflage vest like http://www.weddingbycolor.com/amandaregina/tuxedo-vests-realtree-1087 and if you wear a superhero-pattern vest to comic-con, or a sports logo vest at a sports game, you can bet you will receive compliments, people will ask where you got it, and you may even be stopped to take pictures with others!

Giving a good impression

Wearing a novelty tuxedo vest will likely give people the impression that you are fun, creative, and down to earth. And while these are all great things. There are still some places where a novelty tuxedo vest would be a bad idea. For example, if the event is a black tie event for professionals, then a novelty tuxedo vest would probably make it so people have a hard time taking you seriously, especially since at those types of events, first impression is everything.

When it comes to weddings, it really depends on the wedding itself. If your invited to the wedding but not actively participating in it (groomsman, usher, etc.). Then a novelty tuxedo vest might be acceptable as long as the wedding theme isn’t classic or too professional-looking. And, as strange as it seems that I have to say this. It is not okay to wear a novelty tuxedo vest at a funeral. But if the event is a prom, low-key formal gathering, or fun event, then spice it up!

Difference between suits and tuxedos

Difference between suits and tuxedos

There’s a surprising number of men who still ask the same question that formalwear specialists still get at least once a day: what’s the difference between suits and tuxedos? Granted, to the untrained eye and from a distance these two things might look pretty similar. But it’s more subtle things that make up the difference between suits and tuxedos.

By far the biggest difference between suits and tuxedos is the lapel. Tuxedos will have a satin lapel, giving them a ‘shinier’ look. Tuxedo jackets also have different buttons. Tuxedo buttons lack the four-holed look that suit buttons have, and are instead sewn tight to the jacket using a ‘stem.’ http://www.diffen.com/difference/Suit_vs_Tuxedo” says that suit jacket lapels are often made of the same material as the coat.

Pants make the difference

Pants are another thing that make up the difference between suits and tuxedos. Tuxedo pants will usually have a satin stripe down the vertical side of the leg, whereas suit pants do not have the stripe. Likewise, shoes that are paired with a tuxedo are typically of a patent leather design, though there’s a current trend toward matte finish shoes with tuxedos. Suits, on the other hand, look funny with patent leather shoes, and a pair of nice, non-specific shoes compliment them well.

martin-black-poly-wool-pleated-tuxedo-pants

Now that you know the key differences between tuxedos and suits. Another thing that sets them apart is when they’re typically worn. Suits are more casual than tuxedos. Wearing a suit to any of these would probably make someone look. For lack of better terms, underdressed and out of place. They recommend suits. For just about everything else: more casual weddings, semi-formal dinners, semi-formal work functions, etc. It’s not good to look overdressed, either.

How to be a good groomsman

Becoming a good groomsman

A good groomsman; will you be one? Perhaps you’ve just been asked to be one in a friend’s wedding party. The lessons in how to be a good groomsman are pretty simple, and most of them are really just common sense. But, for those that need some help, here’s some lessons in how to be a good groomsman.

First, and this is probably the most important tip in how to be a good groomsman: if you have negative opinions about marriage, keep them to yourself. It doesn’t matter if you are used to being yourself around them, just don’t do it. It doesn’t matter how many Netflix originals you’ve watched about miserable marriages; it’s no help to the groom, and it’s definitely no help to the bride, and it will make you a drag on the entire affair.

More Tips

Another important tip for how to be a good groomsman, is to not procrastinate with any of your duties. Don’t worm your way out of helping the groom pick things if he asks for help. I know it’s usually the best man’s job to plan the bachelor party (if there is one,) but offer your help anyway…he’ll appreciate it, and it will elevate you in his eyes and the groom’s. And please, don’t show up late to get your measurements for your tuxedo; I’ve seen firsthand the problems that can create not just for you, but for the groom as well. Less than ten days before the wedding is late, but you’ll ideally be in more like twenty days before.

Last but certainly not the least important tip in how to be a good groomsman is this: handle yourself with class at the wedding. Yes, absolutely do dance, have fun, laugh with everyone. But don’t be that guy that gets so drunk he pukes, dances so foolishly he rips his tuxedo, or so tactless he hits on every woman at the wedding. People will definitely remember. And if you’re a good groomsman, people will remember that, too.

Fitted Tuxedo Shirts

Fitted Tuxedo Shirts

Fitted Tuxedo Shirts

The first, and probably biggest difference between the newer fitted tuxedo shirts and the older standard tuxedo shirts is…well, the fit! Fitted tuxedo shirts are tapered more in the chest, waist, and arms area, whereas the standard tuxedo shirts tend to be roomier in all three of those areas. Depending on who you are and what kind of build you have, this can either be a good or a bad thing. If you have a slimmer, more athletic body, a fitted shirt would definitely work with your physique. However, if you are carrying extra weight around your middle, chest and arms, then a standard tuxedo shirt will work better with your body.

The typical fitted tuxedo shirt also lacks the pleats that the more classic, standard tuxedo shirts usually have. Pleats are the folds of fabric that vertically adorn the center of the tuxedo shirt, on either side of the buttons. Modern formal-wear styles tend to leave the pleats out, and therefore a lot of fitted tuxedo shirts, which are more in style right now, do not have them. According to Tuxedo Fashions, “flat-front shirts are good for a night out or casual use, as opposed to pleated.”

Modern Tuxedo Fitted Shirts

The modern fitted tuxedo shirt is definitely more favorable than the older standard-fit, pleated shirts. However, the classic shirts do have a couple things on their side. The classic pleated tuxedo shirt will typically cost less to rent or buy than their more trendy, pleat-less counterparts. Pleated tuxedo shirts also hold a more formal, less casual look than the pleat-less ones…. Without a jacket, one might think that someone with a pleat-less fitted shirt on is just wearing a suit shirt. But there’s no written rule on what shirt you have to get when you are completing your formal look. Again, different shirts will look better with different body types and tuxedo styles.

Fitted Tuxedos

Fitted Tuxedos

Fitted Tuxedo

Fitted tuxedos are one of the hottest trends in Men’s fashion. They are known as slim fit. Tailored fit or athletic fit tuxedos. Despite the first impression from the untrained eye, not all tuxedo coats are the same. Different coats will fit different people better than others, and possibly the biggest factor when considering what tuxedo to rent or buy is whether you want a fitted tuxedo or not.

The definition of a fitted tuxedo is pretty obvious: a tuxedo which was either tailored specifically for your body, or looks like it was tailored for you. Typically a tuxedo that is fitted will conform to your body. Accentuating all of your best physical features. For example, it will taper more in the waist area, usually have either smaller or non-existent shoulder pads, and most fitted tuxedos nowadays are made of a lighter, more comfortable weave of fabric than a standard tuxedo.

When Not To Wear a Fitted Tuxedo

As strange as it may sound that I have to say this, fitted tuxedos are not for everyone. There are some body types that a fitted tuxedo will actually look worse on, as opposed to a standard fit tuxedo. For someone overweight a fitted tuxedo coat will not only cling to their larger abdomen and make it more obvious. But there will be a lot less room in the chest area, which always means less mobility.

In some cases, there will even be a chance that the fitted tuxedo coat could rip open. Permanently damaging the garment; an expensive mistake if it’s a rental. Fitted tuxedos are typically only made up to a certain size. Usually between a 46 to a 54, going by chest sizes. The biggest size currently available on Ike Behar’s website in a two-button notch lapel style is a 48 chest.

Conclusion

A fitted tuxedo can either be a great idea, or a terrible one. Fitted tuxedos are generally more expensive than standard ones, so buying a standard tuxedo might save you some scratch. However, if you want the optimal look and performance for your formalwear. Then the fitted tuxedo is the way to go.
